They Not Like Us Hoodie – DavyJonesLockers x Artis Atlas Gonzalez

The They Not Like Us hoodie is more than fashion—it’s a raw, unapologetic statement on history, beauty standards, and cultural appropriation. Featuring an original art piece by Artis Atlas Gonzalez, this design is inspired by the tragic yet powerful story of Saartjie (Sara) Baartman, a South African woman from the Khoikhoi people who was trafficked to Europe, exhibited in freak shows, and dehumanized for profit. Even in death, her body was used to justify racist pseudoscience, until she was finally laid to rest in 2002.

At the center of the hoodie, the artwork tells a deeper truth. A doll, placed on the 1st place podium, represents the forced beauty standards of today—features once ridiculed and weaponized against Black women now praised when worn by others. Like torn magazine clippings, society picks and chooses which Black features are "beautiful" when placed on someone else—lips, curves, cheekbones, hair—all celebrated on a Kim Kardashian but mocked or vilified on a Sara Baartman.

For a long time, this piece sat unfinished—something was missing. Then Kendrick Lamar dropped a song that put everything into perspective. They can imitate our look, steal our culture, tan their skin, and claim our features, but as the song says:

"THEY NOT LIKE US."
